God answers a little boy’s prayers

A little boy and his adult sister came to Bakersfield’s FPA abortion center intending to just pray on Monday, but God gave them an unexpected ministry opportunity.  Soon they would be sharing a meal with a special guest: a woman whose child had been scheduled to be aborted.

On Sunday morning, Hugo, 8, had come with his family to pray outside the abortion facility, as part of the Our Lady of Guadalupe prayer day.  My wife Terri walked with him around the building, explaining where the babies are killed.  “God hears your prayers,” Terri encouraged Hugo, “your prayers are special!”  Although the abortion chamber was closed on Sunday, God touched Hugo’s heart during the prayer time, giving him a desire to come back on an abortion day.

On Monday, Hugo asked his sister Sandra to bring him back to FPA.  Sandra’s schedule was extremely busy; although she was interested in praying more at FPA, she didn’t know if she could find time for it.  “Finally, I decided I’m going to make time for it,” Sandra later told me.  By investing her time and allowing herself to be temporarily inconvenienced, Sandra was blessed with an experience she will never forget.

As Sandra and Hugo stood on the sidewalk praying, “Denisha” walked out of the FPA building.  Terri approached her, offering a post-abortion gift.  But Denisha told Terri “I didn’t have it done yet.”  Denisha’s pregnancy was too far along for a one-day procedure, so she had been told to return in a few minutes for a two-day procedure.

Little Hugo stood nearby listening as Denisha explained her reasons for scheduling the abortion: she already has two young children, and her children have been taken away by Child Protective Services because her youngest child has not been gaining enough weight.  She expects her children to be given back to her at an upcoming court date, but being pregnant again could complicate the situation.  She was also afraid of telling her parents that she is pregnant again.

“I know it’s wrong to have an abortion,” she confessed, “but I’ll just repent and God will forgive me.”  Terri and several other people continued pleading with her for over an hour, but her heart remained hardened.  There seemed to be nothing anybody could say that would change her mind.  For over an hour, Denisha kept insisting that she was just going to go back inside and “get it over with.”

During much of the conversation, Hugo stood close to Denisha, looking up into her eyes.  Meanwhile, Sandra prayed nearby on the sidewalk, tears filling her eyes.  “Her situation seemed so hopeless,” Sandra told me later.

At one point Hugo quietly said to Denisha, “but your mother didn’t abort you.”

Finally, Denisha broke down and cried, realizing that she couldn’t go through with the abortion.  When her tears subsided, Denisha’s facial expession changed: the look of anxiety was gone, being replaced by a huge smile and an appearance of peace and joy.

In preparation for the planned abortion, Denisha had gone without eating.  So Sandra offered to take Denisha out to eat.

“I really want to get to know God, but I don’t know how,” Denisha told Sandra.  “I want to start living right.”  The thought of going to church excited her.

Denisha asked Sandra to pray for her, because she plans to tell her parents about the pregnancy today.

The joy of being used by God to help save Denisha and her child from abortion impacted more than just Sandra and Hugo: other members of their family shed tears of joy later that day when they heard how God had used Hugo and Sandra.  The eternal rewards of setting aside our busy schedules to invest an hour in prayer outside a childkilling center may not always be as obvious as they were for Sandra yesterday, but when God gives us the opportunity to participate in saving a child’s life we are always blessed when we accept His invitation.
