Too busy to take an hour to pray outside an abortion chamber?
We know what it’s like to be busy. Terri and I are ministry leaders, church volunteers, homeschool teachers, parents of 11 children (10 at home, including four teenagers, a two-year old, and practically every age in between). I have clients from coast to coast coming to me for computer programming work. I have an overwhelming backlog of website projects. I need to work on important tasks relating to the new pregnancy center we are starting in another community. On a good day I accomplish about 25% of the tasks which absolutely had to get done that day. Our financial problems are seemingly insurmountable. During the past few weeks (according to my schedule) I was supposed to be focusing on laying the groundwork for a major fundraiser later this year.
But babies are dying across the street. I watch the women enter, knowing that their wombs are full of life, and I watch them leave, empty and hurting. And I have a living God whose Spirit cries out to my heart, calling me to action. I know that my God has not called me to do this alone, but He has established His Church to do His work on the earth.
We have always known that God’s solution to abortion is His Church. But how do we get people out of the pew and activate them to be used as God’s hands and feet in the lives of women and children who are hurting? We have tried countless ways (including writing books, pamphlets, and even songs), but ultimately, if the people don’t show up, we know we are still responsible. If someone else ignores the call (even if he is an important church leader) that does not give us an excuse to ignore the call. We are accountable to God.
When we learned about 40 Days for Life, we knew that this was an opportunity for God to activate those who are truly His to bring an end to abortion. Quite candidly, I didn’t want to do it, because I was selfishly more concerned about my own “to-do” list. But (like most of the good things that have been done in our lives) my wife Terri sensed that this is what God wants us to do.
And so, no matter how busy, poor, or stressed out we are, we will proceed, as God guides us. There are so many other things I would rather be doing. But there will be time for those things, if we simply follow the path God has set before us.
Are you too busy to pray outside your local abortion chamber? God knows your schedule, and He knows your heart. How many things on your schedule are more important than the life of a child? If you truly cannot find one hour to pray outside this death camp–not in the early morning, not in the late evening, not on the weekends–God knows. But please, be honest with yourself, and with your Lord.
